Kevin,

As a former reading specialist, I should have a good list to send you,
but all I can think of off the top of my head is an anecdote about the
American artist Benjamin West: He could not afford to buy brushes so he
made his own from his cat's fur. There is a children's book on it,
don't know how appropriate it would be for your age group.
