I do an Art Club with my fifth grade elementary students. This is the
description I give:

Art Club is a community service club where students will do advanced artwork
and do school projects the members choose to accept.

I do it for one hour each week. The first year I had 5 kids...the second
year I had 15....this year I already have 20.

They do murals for school events and concerts, serve as docents for our
school-wide art show, they are doing a float for our UN Day parade...on and
on. Then..mostly toward the spring, they do their own work. It can be
acrylic painting, clay, mixed media sculpture, etc. I let them choose...it
gets a little crazy sometimes...but they love it. And I already have fourth
graders asking when they can join!!! I tell them NEXT YEAR...when they are
in fifth grade! The previous art teacher had let some fourth graders in
during the spring...but I have found the fifth graders love having a club of
their own!

Also, this year, I am asking for a stipend. Am crossing my fingers!!!

I have to say, if any one has an opportunity to have an after school club...I
say do it...it really promotes art. And...as most of use do not have any
sort of Gifted or enrichment for those over achieving students...this really
helps!
