I have to teach a core based SOL in all my art lessons. The classroom
teachers have "benchmarks" for each six weeks...they have certain SOL's that
have to be taught during that time. I teach at two different school each 12
weeks and they want me to follow the benchmarks as well. Talk about limiting
your art lessons!
I spend most of my time trying to figure out how to include the SOL's into
art without to much damage to the art lesson/activity the day.
I would be art teacher of the year if I spend as much time on my art
lessons/art SOL's
as I do on the core based SOL's. Just for fun, I counted all the SOL's that
I'm supposed to cover along with all the art SOL's and it comes to over 500!
I love art, teaching art and the kids but I hate the stress that has been
dumped on my shoulders by the administration.
Hang in there and enjoy the time when you actually get to teach art!
