At my middle school, we get one 45 minute plan period a day. However, we
have a number of teachers who miss a lot of school (frequently on Mondays and
Fridays) and we have a very difficult time getting subs. Therefore, it is
not uncommon for us teachers to have to sub during our plan period one or
two times a week...sometimes three. We get paid fourteen dollars for
And, if I may vent...our secretary doesn't mind asking us to sub, but if we
need papers copied and cannot get to the Xerox machine because we are
subbing, she and the other secretary won't run them off for us! How's that
for a "support" staff??
Personally, I think the administration should do something to improve teacher
attendance--offer an incentive perhaps or start a wellness program or get
after the teachers who abuse sick leave. As one of those workhorses who
never misses a day, I really get annoyed with those teachers who manage to
miss at least one day per week.
