I find it fascinating that you have to have a certificate to substitute
teach. Here, they'll hire anyone who breathes and graduates high school and
doesnt' have a criminal record, because they're so desperate for subs. Not
desperate enough to pay well, or offer benefits mind you, but desperate
enough........all's ya gotta do is sit through a 2 - 3 hour class.
Speaking of subs, FYI to the list, there is now organizing a national
substitute teacher's association and they are moving fast. If you live near
San Bernardino, CA, you will have seen an article about their local chapter
in the paper there this week I think. The first national conventionwas held
in DC this summer. Their aim is to improve the situations of and gain
respect for stubstitute teachers the country over. There is a website, I
think....if I can find it I will let you know.
