Before I started teaching I spent many years making art and trying to make a
living from my art. I supported myself by driving a taxi and then a limo. It
was a struggle to find the time to stay in my studio, create and then promote
my work.
I had exhibitions got involved in performance art and got grants and awards
to perform in lots of places around the US. While I got some recognition and
success it was always a struggle.
Ten years ago I started teaching middle school. I still created work during
the first two years of my teaching but then got involved in doing more and
more stuff at school including learning about and teaching technology.
Last year, I cut back on my extra curricula activities at school and decided
to spend more time making art again. It has been great getting back into the
creative process. I feel that being an artist gives me more to give to my
students.
Some of the posts in this thread have talked about taking classes to be a
better artist. My advice is to get into your studio and make your own
decisions on your own art. That is what being an artist is about.
