This is for Roberta and anyone else who likes to think
critically about art and the philosophy of movements
in art history- which should be all of you- ha ha!
Roberta-
Yeah, I guess your husband's work on his car does
count as Minimalist art! I took a class called
Criticism and Theory in undergraduate school and I
loved it!! I wish I would have thought of a comment
like yours to bring up in class. For my term paper I
studied it- and even though my title was "Why
Modernist Painters Wasted Their Time" (hee hee)
reading about the philosophy behind minimalism made me
understand it so much more. Of course I had already
submitted my thesis and outline to my professor and I
didn't want to change my idea. I think its all about
the zen behind the craft- so yeah- working on a car
would be about the same thing. We actually read the
book Zen and the Art of Archery in that class. I don't
know whether or not you still make art- I know some
people have posted just recently that they make art
and teach at the same time- but if you do, you know
that there are some times when you feel better about
creating than others. You have to get in the "zone"-
when your right brain opens up entirely and you block
out everything else. Maybe minimalists try to get in
the zone and stay there- maybe what some see as
interesting and thought provoking the minimalist
artists see as distracting. HMMM?? ......I need to go
back to school. Thanks for giving me an outlet. If I
said this stuff to anyone at work they would think I
was speaking in tongues.
