Some successful projects I have left for a sub at elementary have been:
* Have the kids design a poster that will tell people about the
vocabulary/art history/techniques they have been learning about during
the current project.
* Have the kids design a bumper sticker with the theme "Art is Cool",
"Impressionism Really Makes a Point", or whatever.
* Draw a self-portrait in profile.
Middle School:
* Draw a design that incorporates a hand, your name, a star, a plant, a
symbol, a circle, and a square. Use shading.
* Draw 8 overlapping circles. Shade to make these look like balls or
bubbles.
* Have a list of art careers. Have the students create a "Want Ad" that
explains this career and what the requirements are, what it pays, etc.
and an illustration of that career. Students are allowed to guess if the
information is not available to them (such as wages).
* Have magazine triangles cut out (non-objective) and glue one each onto
white paper. With oil pastels try to finish the design that the triangle
implies so that the triangle is camoflauged.
These are just some ideas off the top of my head. I hate to have subs
"help" on current projects, as no matter how detailed my lesson plans
are I always return to some interesting interpretations.
