Try paper (relief) embossing. What you will need is a pan for
soaking pieces of drawing, printing or watercolor paper: newsprint and/or
blotting paper, tape, scissors, pieces of scrap mat board.
Students will use scissors to cut 2 or 3 simple shapes from
mattboard. Lay out shapes separately on single sheet of newsprint paper,
one per student. Shapes can be attached to newsprint with double sided
tape. Student will put name in pencil on piece of paper and soak in tray
of water for a least 5 minutes or until the paper is limp. Remove paper
from tray (allow excess water to drain in pan), then place between sheets
of newsprint or blotting paper and gently massage until printing paper has
no water shine on it. Lay limp paper on top of
matboard shapes and using the smooth handle end of the scissors, gently
press the limp paper around the edges of the matboard shapes until the
shapes stand up in relief. Go over in different directions, easing out any
creases that form in the stretching of the paper. Avoid rubbing the paper
with the fingers. Lay out all papers on drying rack. Newsprint and blotting
papers can be reused after dry. When dry, mounted or matted embossings make
a good display in the school.
