Save some empty pop cans with variety of design, letters and
colors. Ask students to slightly crush or dent cans and set on table as
solitary still life item. Using standard pencils, white chalk and crayons
on colored pastel copy paper, the students can do stunning trompe l'oeil
style drawings of the pop can. Lots of possibilities for lesson extensions.
On my own funds I have purchased cookies with sculpted patterns
and teach the Giant Cookie Lesson--or "You can have your art and eat it
too." Each child gets a cookie to observe and study (a magnifying lens is
useful, too,) and with colored chalks, must make a giant version of the
relief design. We do this on 12" square manilla and finish off background
in watercolor wash. The students get to eat their cookie when drawing is
finished. I am always popular that week :-) !
