You sound like you've also read Neil Postman's-"The End of Education"-
He discusses education/schools not having a narrative or vision.
He also brings up the concept that people need "gods" to worship and each
generation
has it's contribution.......but they are futile, adding to the plague of
selfishness
and narcissism.
The Bible says"Without vision,the people perish"
We can't ask schools to teach "character education" ( did you know this IS
part of the new curriculum-they ARE trying?) when our society passes off it's
parental responsiblities to the schools. Little wonder it has now become a
teachers job to teach-Hygiene, sex education, abstinence education,
multi-cultural tolerence,
religious tolerence," life-style" tolerence, drug education, offer drinking
/driving
contracts, job training programs, drivers education, uniforms to eliminate
dress code conflicts, conflict resolution, peer counceling, blended family
support groups,
and the list goes on........we also offer parenting skills and G.E.D.'s for
kids who end up with babies. I'm not suggesting that any of these be
eliminated.....
but perhaps they should enroll the parents with the children.
I beleive there is only one animal in nature that passes the rearing of it's
offspring
to another animal.......it's some type of bird and it's sneaks it's eggs into
another birds nest so it's young will be fed and raised by the bird with the
host nest.
I'm hoping we can offer our children more than this......
perhaps we can offer ourselves...it's called parenting.
