We have total inclusion in the middle school. Students, no more than 2 come
into the regular ed classes. I used to have the severe and profound classes
separate. Now, I adapt the lessons for those kids within the class and
encourage the other kids to interact with them. They are really there for
social rather than academic reasons. Once you realize that, adaptation is
much easier. They come with one aide for one to two children. Just make sure
that you don't have more than one aide in a class at a time or they start
visiting when you're trying to teach and it's disruptive. It also makes for
too many bodies in the room. I like inclusion most of the time, because it
exposes the regular classes to special needs students and helps to break
down more prejudices and promotes acceptance of diversity which I believe is
very valuable in education, no matter what the curriculum. Linda K.
