Since some of you asked, here are some of the responses I've gotten so far
regarding the art of Puerto Rico.
Yes, Ricky Ricardo was from Cuba, however Ricky Martin is from Puerto Rico.
My husband worked in PR for a couple of years awhile back & we visited him
many times. (Our kids were with me in Georgia & in high school & college).
Check out the Galleria Botello in San Juan. You might find something there.
There are many others but I have no connections. Ask your kids about the
"Santos". These are statues carved by farmers, because they could not afford
alter figures of their special Biblical saints. They also make colorful
masks
to wear at their many festivals. The Architecture is very colorful (Easter
egg colors) and Mediterranean style. There is a rain forest in El Yunque on
the Caribbean side of the island. San Juan is located on the Atlantic side.
Christopher was the first European to discover PR, but Indians had been
there
for thousands of years prior. Ponce de Leon was the first Governor of the
colony. He went in search of the Fountain of Youth, when he discovered
Florida. Returning from his second trip to Fl. he was killed by Indians. The
unofficial mascot of P.R is the Coqui Frog. Only the mail makes the cute
sound. Guess I better stop. Good luck.

For those interested in the art of Puerto Rico I suggest you get in touch
with the Museo del Barrio in New York City. Also the Bronx Museum in New
York City.
Susan

You might look at the very interesting work of artist Marina Gutierrez . I
think Marina is in New York but her work is influenced by Puerto Rican folk
art.
Betty

Vejigante masks, parades. Cacique pendants. Little sculptures of Coqui the
frog. Relief sculptures of the beautiful buildings with the balconies. We
have a lot of Puerto Rican families in our community. Let me know if you
need elaboration.
