I make portfolios for each child. I just take one week out of my
schedule and make them. I get donated paper (or you could use
newspaper) and do a lesson on design, like with lettering and borders
(simplified for the K-2s). Then they go to town, using markers and
crayons, designing their portfolio (which says "my art portfolio, name,
grade"). While they are working on this, I go around with thick tape
and tape up the sides (the paper is folded in half). Voila! A
portfolio that will be stored by class/grade level in a discarded copy
paper box in my closet.
I keep the papers we are working on in a flat coke box (I have one
labeled with each teacher's name). When we have a few piling up in
there, I just pass out the portfolios and the papers and they "stuff"
their own. for the younger kids, I will let the older ones who finish
early do the "filing" for me. The kids take home their portfolios at
xmas break and at the end of the year. I do have them save one or two
pieces for the spring art show. I would like, eventually, to have a
fall and a spring art show, but haven't gotten that organized yet!
