Sharon,
You are doing exactly what they are teaching in college now! It is the
D.B.A.E. (Disciplined Based Art Education). This method of teaching the
Elements, Principles, & Aesthetics along with Art Production is good, and
many of these things can easily work into a lessen. It's a given to start
off with Art History in respect to your project, (it is interesting to know
why & what was done in the past). Follow up with Art Criticism. This will
train the students to really TALK in art terms and not say the "CUTE" word.
This is such an important step, and time should be allowed for this. Students
will begin to think, and care more about what they are doing if they know
they will later have to explain it. All will learn from each other. Good luck
with your classes!
