I teach art, k-2nd grade. During my first year, I held the philosphy that
art was its own reward and felt that handing out goodies, etc. was
unnecessary. Experience taught me otherwise. The kids were first, too young
to understand the concept that art was its own reward; second, their other
teachers were giving out cookies, pretzels, stickers, etc. for appropriate
behavior as positive reinforcement. I now use incentives, and like the
other teachers, find that after a while, the students do the right thing
automatically, needing only occasional reinforcement. Best wishes, Diane L.
