For maracas, which i taught to second graders! I used the Art From Many Hands
book. It is a great resource & will also have background info for you to
create a visual if you wish. I too used balloons, but had older kids come
help blow them up! That was the hardest part. I use paper mache too, & my
wonderful husband cut these great sticks, 1-1 1/2" in diameter for the
handles. Those I had them masking tape on, on second day of the lesson, &
then cover it w/ p.mache to take the paint as same as maraca. We painted the
dry maracas w/ acrylics, in one bright color. When dry, added island birds,
tropical scenes, etc. but your idea sounds very nice! Good luck. And I do
recommend that book, it has so much to offer,multiculturally.
