With all the talk about newspaper in a kiln thought I would mention this: I
went to a workshop years ago, (can't remember who it was now--guy who runs
the ceramic college in Las Vegas--what's his name?) and learned that you
shouldn't be afraid to try new things in a kiln. You can get some
interesting results from everyday objects.
He cautioned against using anything that was flammable or dangerous, but to
try things nonetheless. He suggested trying toothpaste, things in your
fridge, etc.
You want to have a well vented kiln of course, but I remember getting
beautiful red rings on the clay from pickeled jalapeno slices.
