All my hs art students ( It teach crafts) are required to keep a
journal/notebook. It contains: notes, sketches, samples and a personal
reflection of their current project. 1st year students are given the
notes..which include historical and/or background info as well as procedures,
vocabulary etc. For the advanced students, it's a little different. After the
first project or two, they get used to the idea of writing about their
work...and actually look forward to it. At the end of the year they have a
journal of the year's work. And in June, the are required to write a
reflection on their work for the year. Many students look back in their
journals to review, discuss etc their work. This also fullfills the literacy
goals of my district. P.S. I started this way before the district required
literacy goals.
