We're all in the same boat, it seems. When I first began teaching, we
asked our students to come up with $20 for the year, each. Junior High,
who had only a semester of art at a time, were asked to put up $10. 75%
of the budget was funded this way. But it was unequal and inefficient:
the kids who could pay divided into those who paid right away and those
who paid late. The kids who couldn't pay were squeezed by withheld
grades until they did pay up. I funded my program and tried to keep
receipts, but on a part-time salary this became impossible. So I stopped
collecting the money from the kids and went to the administration. I was
supported by the administration, but no increase in the budget: about
$300 for the year from the High School, and an additional $100 from the
Junior High. They took extra money from other departments, which didn't
really endear me. The trouble is the district is poor.
So upshot one: I want to engage my students in fundraising (and fun) to
create money for an art club's activities and to increase the art
Has anyone got ideas for fundraising activities that are fun, legal, and effective?
By the way, having read messages in the group, I see I am not in a very
bad situation, really. It's just that I'd like to have my own copy of,
say, Jim Dine's Art on the Walls video, because nobody else wants to get
it for us. I'd like to get my whole class to San Francisco (about $800
for a day and one bus). I'd like to get a press...I'd like to....
