I know our concern when having a sub is what to leave for sub plans, but
there is another aspect that needs to be addressed. When I introduce rules
and procedures at the beginning of the term, I also tell the classes that I
won't be gone unless I have no choice. Then I tell them that if I'm gone I
expect them to be excellent for a sub, that they have one of the hardest
jobs in the world and I expect them to be almost better for a sub than they
are for me. Then, when I am gone, I write on the board that any notes on
inappropriate behavior left by the sub is an automatic 20 minute detention.
During detention, they write what they did, what they should have done and
how they will choose differently in the future. THEN they write an apology
to the sub which I mail. I also tell them I expect to only hear good things
about them from a sub. This usually helps a lot. Last sub I had left me an
unprecedented four names. 80 minute sacrifice, all on different days, but
worth it if the word gets out that I mean it. Linda K.
