Recently I sent a group of friends a lesson plan on The Elements of Art.
Bunki suggested that I send it to the entire listserv. It seems like a good
plan for a long term substitute who is perhaps an art teacher or at least
somewhat knowledgeable. It is a good review of the elements ..and requires
little more than a pencil, paper etc...well just read it.

INTRODUCING THE ELEMENTS OF ART
THE elements of ART are in all works of ART...they can be used to discuss
works of art and to compare works of art that seem unrelated.
The objective of this lesson is to become familiar with the elements of art
and to create a reference work of art that helps you understand the
elements.
materials:
1 sheet of copier paper onto which you draw a square that is 6 x 6
inches
a ruler, carbon paper
1 sheet of drawing paper that is 12 x 18 inches.
Fold it in half the short way and fold it in thirds the
long way ..
so you have a sheet of paper with 6 boxes that measure 6
x 6 inches square each.
pencil, and colored pencils
India ink and pens (they could do this in pencil first and go over
it in pen when you return)
textured surfaces for rubbing.
directions:
within the square you have drawn on your copier paper...draw a letter that
is part of your name. Make it touch the edges of the square and make it an
outlined letter like these examples.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ (here I put 3 lines of the alphabet in outline
form, different fonts)
you may use lower case letters.design you own lettering style or copy one
you see on this sheet.
Each square will contain one element. this is important .
Line- fill the spaces of the square with as many types of lines as there
are spaces
Shape- fill the positive spaces with organic shapes and negative spaces
with geometric shapes. Fill in and outline.
Form -darken the edges of the letter and lighten to center, darken the
edges of the square and lighten to center.
Texture - create rubbings off textured surfaces in each shape.
Color- blend from one color to another in all shapes. Make the positive
shapes warm and the negative shapes cool.
Value - draw parallel stripes across the square through the letter with
pencil. From the handout of ink textures, fill each shape with an inked
texture. Emphasize light and dark shapes.

You will notice space is omitted because space is in everyone of these
designs...On the shape element, we talk about positive and negative space.

I am using this as a reference for my students. On the back of each square
we are writing about the properties of that particular element. If your
students are diligent this takes at least 3 days to do. I had to teach mine
about measuring and folding even though they are in high school. Sometimes
they just don't think about " economy of means."

Other thoughts on sub lessons.
I have several one period lessons that I use that require creativity and
few other materials. I agree..a sub can ruin your supplies.
(unintentionally, of course!)
I remember that Picasso film as being questionable... as to showing it to
my classes. I saw the film and read the book.
