I teach elementary art and we grade on an H,S,I scale.
H=Highly Satisfactory
S=Satifactory
I=Improvement Needed

I am still at a rough elementary school, and I grade my students basically
how you described. Did they follow directions? Did they keep their mouths
shut? Did they not try to kill each other or me? :) The only good thing is
that I don't have to worry about angry parents. We never see the parents...

If you're now at a better school, I don't see a reason why you shouldn't
give more higher grades.
