Grading in elementary art

I have used several systems when having to grade for art. Usually it was
with a check plus, check, or check minus in the grade book..For an Excellent,
Satisfactory, or needs to improve.
Then I prepared a matrix--You remember matrix? Mine had about four or five
categories on the left hand vertical side with expectations listed. Across
the top was a frowny face, straight line face, or smiley face. The
statements in the center were written in question form--for example, "Did you
use a variety of colors and materials?" would be in the "smiley" area of the
matrix. The older children could then be responsible for how much effort
they would put into their work..
But my all time favorite is to use the analogy of a weight lifter. I
tell the children that those body builders and wrestlers they see on tv did
not start out lifting a hundred pounds..they had to work up to it..and the
weight lifters had to decide how strong they wanted to be, so they lifted
more and more every day until they got strong enough to lift over a hundred
pounds. When we draw, we practice in a sketchbook first when we start
something new, or on a piece of newsprint or scrap paper. If they only want
to lift "10 pounds" and only draw the object once..that is fine..But if they
want to learn to lift a hundred pounds, they draw the object three different
sizes or in three other ways. Those are the students I would classify as
OUTSTANDING... And I'd really rather not have to grade at all, I prefer to
see a child accept a challenge in my class and come up with a creative
solution to a problem. But, alas, credibility is often measured by the
grading system....
