I was in a meeting the other day at our region center and a lady was talking
about a self-portrait project she does with 2nd & 3rd graders. She has
posters with various sized and shaped features (a poster of noses, ears,
eyes, etc.). The students work in pairs, while one student draws on black
the other student is the observer. The observer tells the drawer which eye
is appropriate and then helps with placement and proportion. Once one
drawing is finished the other one begins. When both students have finished
drawing the students go over the outlines with white glue (must dry clear).
When the glue is dry the various areas are filled with pastels. The glue
lines keep the pastels separated and the lines stay crisp. The results were
outstanding. I plan on trying a similar project with my jr. high students.
