simple hard-bound books on a budget

Another question for this wonderful group: I'd like to make really
nice, but simple and inexpensive hard-bound books with my 6th-9th graders.
They will use them as theme books for a trimester. I do not have a book
press. Has anyone worked this out before? Suggestions with details like
getting all the supplies at a good rate and doing this en masse with 28
energetic inner city kids at once?
