Re Holiday Art and Pilgrims.
I know it can sometimes be a stretch to connect the holidays...I DON"T
unless their is an objective from our state standards I can teach in a
solid way that comes from and is about art
.This is when I introduce American Primitive artist Edward Hicks and
his work. The students love to analyze his creatures(people eyes!),
etc...The Peaceable Kingdom (in some of its many versions) has a
meeting of the Pilgrims and Native Americans in the background (ok,
leave the politics of it out for the little ones!).....
So we do a detailed analysis of the work and discover how he created
foreground, middle and background interest. Then they create their own
scenes creating the illusion of depth working from farthest away to
foreground with cut paper.
