Regarding grading on art work. I have the students complete a self assessment
that is very analytical with written questions on the
artist/techniques/culture. etc we have studied as well as reflective type
questions on the various lessons (What they liked, didn't like, if they cvould
do it over, etc). Grades only go on those sheets not on the work itself.
Besides the students doing the self assessment I grade their work on the same
sheet and we often have peer reviews too. This is done with 8th and 9th
graders in a suburban upstate New YOrk junior high school that has 950 8th and
ninth graders. We have three full time art teachers and teach Art 8, Studio in
Art (The NYS course for graduation requirement), and a Media Arts course.
