You mentioned that at the beginning of a 30min period you use slides,
posters, etc as part of the motivation. If you can not get the class
period extended, then skip the slide and poster. Simply show a visual of
what you base your adaptation on, and then show a finished sample.Make
projects simple, with few directions. Hand out material. This should take 5
min. Let them work 20min and clean up 5min. When 20 min are up, and clean
up starts, walk around taking things from them so they have to stop
working. It's pushing, but the kids need hands on more than slides, etc.
Maybe you could schedule slides for art history once a month, with a simple
game or color marker narrative drawing session after the slides. I teach
k-2nd grades, 45min periods. Sometimes I actually feel this is too long!
When students are finished with the main lesson, they get free time, I
sometimes structure this time by handing out prelined "comic boxed" 8x10
paper. They are to tell a story filling in the boxes with drawings. They
learn to manage sequence this way.Good luck, Diane L.
