You are correct - funding pet projects for big biz is no different that
funding arts grants. I'm against all of it. No bail outs for Chrysler, no
grants to Karen Finley.
Perhaps I should clarify - I am against grants to individual artists, local
arts organizations, theaters, exhibits, etc. If they can't make it with the
support of their audiences then tough bananas. My crabbiness on the matter
does not extend to all museums - a country has some obligation to preserve
cultural archives, but nada for emerging arts. Any art that can't make it
on its own doesn't derserve to survive.
I would entertian arguments for arts education if it were strictly limited
to that purpose. The second the government provides one penny for, say, a
local theater group I'm off the bus.
