We do a big district show at a local mall. The only elementary schools to
offer art in my district are the gifted and talent magnets. They have a
group show, as do the middle schools, and high schools. At the middle
school level, each campus could enter up to ten pieces per category.
Pieces were selected by the campus teachers, then "prejudged" by other
teachers to make sure the pieces met the requirements for the categories
and to pull the lesser quality work if there were too many. At the high
school level, at one time they had a committee (consisting of district high
school art teacher volunteers), that reviewed each campus' offerings and
pulled anything that didn't meet their standards. It is my understanding
that this has changed, but I don't know yet how it's done now. I'll be
finding out next week, if you're interested. I don't know anything about
the elementary level show. Ribbons are awarded in each category and campus
art departments are judging on how well they do in the show.
At the middle school level, we kept all "show quality" work in a safe place
until the spring. We sent invitations to an after the show party to
everyone who's work we kept. We sent letters of congratulations to
everyone who had work actually accepted into the show. After the show we
had the party to celebrate and return all the artwork. We awarded the
ribbons during the grade level awards ceremony at the end of the year.
