Sandra,
I love the video of Calder (the PBS version you taped for me). It shows the
creative spirit and zaniness of Calder's, and his childlikeness, a great
thing to expose the kids to, that art doesn't have to be so serious.
But I kind of understand the principal (who, by the way is an artist and was
married to one) because of the pressure on her. I think one of the problems
is that we have had such a long period of time with no art in the schools
that the artistic vocabulary doesn't exist for the parents (they didn't have
art in the schools when they were that age). So art is a foreign language,
which is threatening to them.

We have a parent in one school where I teach who has decided that her house
is a sugar-free zone, and now is sueing the school because of cupcake
birthday parties and candy drives, and wants to forbid kids from coming to
school with candy bars in their lunches. ( a good thing she didn't enter him
into our after school theatre group...we're doing Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory!).

I'm not for censor, but for teaching tolerance and communication, acceptance
and the desire to try to understand each other. Too bad so many parents
seem to be teaching their kids the opposite.
