I posted this update under Updates: student & garbage fashion show, which
was probably a bad idea, so I am re-posting under the original title for
those interested .

Many of you responded with great suggestions on how to deal with my
challenging advanced painting student. Based on your comments I tried
talking with him again, referring him to special programs and counselors,
phoning his parent again, etc. Nothing made a difference. He failed my
class and his other art class. Not that I would wish failure on anyone,
but I was a little relieved to see that it was not just my class that was a
problem. We are now nine weeks into the school year. He's started
working! I taught them how to stretch canvas and allowed them a choice of
subjects for this work. I guess it was too much fun to resist. Go figure.
