We might be trying to help 5 or 6-yr-olds understand why Americans
celebrate Thanksgiving. Building on prior knowledge starts with a
foundation - one block at a time. Before children can understand
hundreds of subgroups in a given culture, they must a) learn that the
culture exists and has a history; and b) learn to count. Your approach
would certainly make sense in the 5th grade when students have developed
more abstract mathematical understandings and study American History.
