Re: the "perpetual holiday" of teaching art

"Perpetual holiday" is what I think some teachers think teaching art is...and
I find that humiliating. I work so hard at my curriculum, and plan my lessons
with great care. Then I realize that most think Art is "crafts" alone, and
the children are playing in my a Gym class game of kickball! We
have great fun, but my classes rarely result in 25-30 pieces of artwork that
look just alike (i.e. a craft that was "step-by-step-so-it-looks-like-this-
and-that-color-is-wrong-so-do-it-just-like-this"). I am finding (this is my
first 'official' year, not as a substitute) that displaying their artwork in
the halls with a banner overhead with a catchy phrase (like "2nd Grade seeks
BALANCE and finds it in ART" is helping people (teachers) realize that I am
teaching also!
