To add my thoughts.....I've grown up believing it was the prostitute's
rejection of the ever-obsessed artist's love for her also. That's what my
teachers said, that's what the books said. In the past 5 yrs. or so, more
books have come to the surface denouncing that theory and saying it was the
incessant "ringing in the ears" that drove him bonkers and he finally
committed suicide...the "ringing" coming from a disease he suffered with
for many years supposedly.

I dunno. Which is it? Who do you trust? You can't believe all that you read
and hear. I suppose there might be a little bit of true to
everything....... sooooooooo. It's enlightening for kids to know that and
this is an insightful example to use. That's the way I approach it, anyway.
