As educators, we can involve kids in art with ties to the environment by
educating them on environmental issues and asking for student input about
possible solutions. Creating a mural in protest of land being developed or
trees being cut down, animals displaced from their natural habitat. Any
artistic response to the environment would give students a voice concerning
issues they may not have thought about or been aware of before.
Speaking as both an artist and an educator, I understand environmental art as
being art that explains life, the world, and issues concerning the earth in
any context. Artists internalizing the external and creating an external,
work of art in response.
Ecological art is not something that I have ever really given much thought
about, especially in my community. However, in Tucson, recent protests
continue to be waged to save an endangered Pigmy Owl's habitat. Schools have
taken empty lots near by and using an integrated subject approach, had the
entire school design and create a garden where once there were broken beer
bottles and other dangerous debris. National parks are now charging admission
to help conserve the forests and in the past have prohibited vehicles from
entering in order to stop erosion and maintain the surroundings.
