Hi!
A few years ago I was fortunate to have some funds to purchase toy
animals of several endangered species groups from the Museum of
Natural History in Albuquerque, NM. I also found some toy animals at
Cost Plus that were domestic... like sheep, cattle, etc. I do a
drawing unit on contour line with my fourth graders. I put an upside
down apple box (from the cafeteria) in the middle of each table and
place one animal for each student to draw near the edge. This puts the
animal at eye level, so the pictures have the perspective that one is
standing on the ground looking at the animal. I have tables of 4
students, so 2 draw endangered species, and 2 draw domestic animals.
They draw with a fine point pen. Then we talk about creating a
background for the animal... what environment would it choose to live
in?
As they are working I start talking about the animals, and most
students can point out that polar bears and mountain gorillas are
endangered species. There is always someone who knows what endangered
means. We then talk about habitat, and how the homes of these animals
are being destroyed. We also talk about the domestic animals. Here on
the Navajo Reservation, overgrazing is a real problem. As one drives
down the road, the difference between the plants between the road and
the fence and the lack of plants on the other side of the fence is
striking. I just try to make the students aware that the animals
themselves are destroying the land here.
We finish the drawings with colored pencils. The students are always
amazed at how realistic their animals look and I hope they take a
little food for thought about our environment with them, too.
