Sharing an idea that worked.....

Since we all seem to be in a great sharing mode lately, I'd like to add
something wonderful that happened to me last Friday. Last year we started
focusing on language arts across the curriculum in our middle school. We
were all asked to come up with ideas in our specialty...mine being in the
fine arts.
I integrated three into my area of with "onomatopoeia" (words
which are formed by the sound that they make like "buzz" and "zap") with
written work done by the students telling why they picked the size paper
they used, colors, shapes, etc.; one with cut const. paper of letters
forming a word chosen by the student like "egg" with the letters making the
egg shape; and a thought-poser called "art is......" which I had posted
many months ago on this list. The language arts committee was really
excited about my ideas and this past staff development day, devoted 1/4 of
the day to my teaching the entire staff my 3 lessons and all the faculty
having a chance (in my classroom) to do the same projects themselves. The
music was playing, the coffee and bagels were nearby and we all had such a
fun time working together and sharing art ideas...all 45 of us! It also was
a big plus for me as peers got to experience what my students
have been doing all along in my classroom...and to re-inforce that I don't
"do" fluff.

If you ever have a chance to do this sometime with your peers at a staff
development day...please do try it. I've already been asked to make this an
annual event now. I love it!
