I just started teaching art to first graders (pulic school) this past September
and I had to think about cencorship. I didn't like it, but I had
to consider if showing nudes or religious symbolism in art was
going to upset any of the children or their parents.
I am showing slides, talking about art, and doing related projects.
I decided to just avoid nudity altogether, to avoid any problems. I didn't
want to risk unhappy parents jeopordizing the program I was proposing.
I discussed it with the teacher and she agreed that would probably be
the best way to go.
Since my son gets a well rounded view of art history at home and at museums, I felt
okay about my decision. What the other children see will be up to their
parents. I figured whatever I am exposing them to has got to be more than
most of them have ever seen anyhow. And that is my objective, to exposur them to art.
