Responding to the question of how we as teachers can get children involved
in the art of their community and their environment:
Children are going to learn about the art in their community by being
exposed to the different works. In our classroom we would introduce an
artist and an ecological issue or project that this artist has addressed in
their artwork. After discussing the issue and artist we would take the
kids on a field trip, allowing them to see the actual artwork that the
artist has produced about this ecological issue. While viewing the artwork
we would encourage the students to identify the issue within the artwork
and how it is depicted. After the children have discussed the artwork, we
could then use this first hand knowledge that they now hold to discuss more
in depth the ecological issue and how well art can inform the public. We
would then be able to discuss the medium of the work and also tie the
experience in with the other content areas that we are teaching.
Now, we are both interested in teaching the primary grades so we think
that we could use a simpler version of what we stated above. For example
we think that we could introduce Buster Simpson's Host Analogue Tree
Project in which he grew new trees out of a rotting tree trunk to
demonstrate the power of new growth. In our classroom we would introduce
his work and then proceed to grow our own plants to demonstrate how each of
us has an affect on the environment. In this project we would be
integrating art, biology, and ecology. Do any other primary teachers feel
that this would be a productive learning experience? Do you have any other
suggestions or experiences in which you are teaching the primary grades
through art and ecology?
