This is from Diana, Anel and Belia.
We are responding to the question about how to involve kids in the art of
their community that ties to the environment.

We live in a city that is rich with cultural diversity. Mexican,
Indigenous and other cultures contribute to the vast majority of Tucson's
citizens. Because of this diversity we also see a great diversity of the
art in this area. Diana mentioned that on the south side of town, where
she lives, adults, as well as children participate in the painting of
murals to keep the neighborhoods from being vandalized with graffiti. She
also suggested that children in the schools should paint murals to keep
other areas and buildings from being vandalized.
Anel said that schools should be more involved in recycling and
the teaching of various ways to keep the environment clean. Students can
become more involved by using recycled goods in their art projects. Odds
and ends from home can be used to make arts and crafts and students
can learn about different aspects of art from the "junk" they collect.
Belia (me) agreed with both Anel and Diana, but more with Diana
(not because I didn't think that Anel's ideas weren't brilliant, but
because) murals are a big part of Tucson's history.
A lot of the murals around town have as their themes espisodes
from regional history, famous people and other cultural subjects. If you
go to the El Rio Neighborhood Center you will see a series of murals, one
of which reflects the love of man for Earth (well, ideally). There are
also a few Native American tribes here in Tucson, like the Yoeme and the
Tohono O'Odham and their work also reflects love for the Earth and Nature.
