A graduate student of mine has just completed her thesis research dealing
with Jacob Lawrence and, in particular, his Migration Series. During her
primary research efforts, she extended an invitation to Mr. Lawrence to
join her and her family for dinner in New York City during his recent
retrospective. The highlight of her research was when she received a personal
phone call from him to discuss The Migration Series. With her interview
questions pre-prepared, she talked with him about his work and his life.
They discovered that her father frequently visited a local Harlem cafe that,
coincidently, was one of Lawrence's favorite places during that same time.
They laughed at the possibility that her father and he had possibly shared
a drink together years ago. What a small world.
