It is my experience that the symbols we see as stereotypes
are necessary steps in the developmental process. When students are
ready for observational drawing, they drop the symbols--though some need
more guidance and encouragement than others. Perspective and proportion
can't be internalized until kids have reached the stage in their
perceptual and mental development to "see"
what seems so obvious to us. No matter how great our teaching methods, they
only work when the student is ready.
