making pastels

I have my pastel class make their own. This year I have an extra
big class and find myself short of china clay - I do have some ball clay
and wonder if that will work as well if I need to use it. I live in a
remote area and runing to the store requires a long drive (hours).
Would appreciate any information or advice anyone has to offer.
