>>THE ROLE OF INTERNS

>>Student interns will work closely with the Director of the Community Arts
Division. After an initial training period, interns will work as art

a journal of their progress. Group discussion sessions with the Director
will be held weekly to provide interns with additional background in arts
administration and to share ideas evolving from their experiences. Current
reading in administration will also be assigned. Interns may also have the
opportunity to meet with artists and art galleries.

>>Additional opportunities are open in the Folk & Traditional Arts Program
which offers a special internship in folklorist education for under-graduate
students majoring in Folklore Studies. The purpose of this program is to l)
offer interested students actual experience in the folklore field and 2) be
involved in the exploration and development of folk and traditional arts
exhibitions and special events.

>>Opportunities are open in the Watts Towers Arts Center which offers a
special internship program for under-graduate students. The purpose of this
program is to l) offer interested students actual experience giving tours at
The Watts Towers which is a national and historic monument known world-wide
and undergoing extensive restoration and reconstruction to preserve the
monument and integrity of Simon Rodia's vision; and 2) be involved in the
exploration and development of exhibitions and special events held at the
Center. The latter would include meeting artists, selected applicable
reading and developing a Gallery Education program to accompany exhibitions.

>>Opportunities are available in the Museum Education Internship Program at
Barnsdall Art Park to formulate and execute and innovative tour guide
program which exceeds the education limitations of traditional docent
lecture tours. The purpose of the program is to l) offer students
interested in museum or art education essential background and actual
experience in the field and, 2) to explore and further develop the
possibilities of art and architecture museums and galleries as vital
educational resources. Emphasis will be placed on the creation of
innovative tour techniques, (e.g., methods of inquiry, experiential games,
how to relate historical information and stimulate aesthetic judgement)
which enhance the confidence and perceptual capacities of tour participants
to look at, experience and enjoy art and architecture.

>>There is also an opportunity for a limited number of interns to develop
experience in curatorial practice through the Exhibitions Program at
Barnsdall Art Park. Selected interns would assist in exhibition research,
organization, management, record keeping and the continued development of
the gallery archive. The purpose of the program is to give students the
opportunity to work on a variety of tasks related to the development of art
exhibition.

>>Finally, there are opportunities for interns at the William Grant Still
Arts Center for graduate and undergraduate students in planning its
education program, exhibition program, special events program and community
organizing efforts. Opportunities for grassroots organizing and arts
advocacy are available through the Center as part of its general impact on
the South Central L.A. and Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills Arts Community.
Collaborations, art classes and workshops, advocacy and outreach programs
extend the Center's and Cultural Affairs Departments efforts to reach this
constituency. Students are presented with an intense exercise in grassroots
exhibition curatorial practice, arts education planning and creating
collaborations to develop education support for the exhibitions program.
