In my "other life" I am a Byzantine Iconographer....try doing that in public
school!
I've tried going about it via portraiture...only Catholic schools are
receptive however.
Try mandalas just focusing on the symmetry (of course) and follow the adage
(sp?) "If the students ask about the background and significance of the
artwork, then the teacher must answer the question."That's your job! ;->
