"In order for learning to be meaningful to children, we need to look at
how all of the disciplines as interrelated. Our society is multicultural,
how can our art not be? The elements and priciples may be taught
through the study of the art of any given culture, but they do not
exist in and of themselves. I guess for me the divisions are
My elementary students are experiencing this concept of connecting with
their study of Japan. We are currently moving from Japan to other cultures
that have been influenced by Japanese artwork. The students are making
"that's like the Hiroshige we saw!" "Did Whistler go to Japan?" "We have
a futon!" "My grandma has a kettle like that one."
Beyond that, they are seeing how the construction of art works are
influencing other artists and cultures. They are making connections.
This, to me, is what multicultural integration means to me. Seeing how we
use, simulate, synthesize others' ways of creation to meet our own needs.
Teachers try to teach students tolerance, sharing, getting along with each
other, etc. This is seeing the big picture.
