We've had great success auction off piggybanks that the students
transform using acrylic paint, Sculpey, and other accessories. Last
year our theme was "children's books" to promote literacy through the
First Book foundation. We had Dr. Seuss pigs, Harold and the Purple
Crayon, Thomas the Tank Engine pigs etc. We raised well over $800.
Banks can be purchased through Oriental Trading Co. We were fortunate
enough to have our student government layout the initial purchase of
the pigs through vending machine money.
We've also ordered small wooden boxes through craft stores .99 cents
each and transformed them dramatically inside and out. Students chose
a "legend" to represent through their boxes and had to place an item
related to their person inside the box. One girl chose Lucille Ball
and decorated the outside to look like the candy conveyor belt with
cut outs of Lucy and Ethel. She painted the box with pink hearts and
placed a faux string of pearls inside of it. It sold for quite a bit
