Subject: Re: [teacherartexchange] art on a budget - shells

Hi Jen,

These are 10th graders, their second year in hs art
which is AP at our school. We did look at O'Keeffe's
shells and others, she is one of my favorites! To
start the kids chose shells and did 4 thumbnail
sketches - one large shell, 2-3 together, 4 - 6
together, and a "zoom" of one of the first three
compositions (in pencil, 6x9). We reviewed
composition "rules" and drawing from basic shapes to
refinement and adding details. Since we hadn't used
charcoal before I did a practice demonstration and the
kids drew along with me - we outlined, shaded,
blended, erased for highlights, drew with the eraser,
experimented with line quality. Then they had to
choose 2 of their thumbnails to enlarge, one with
charcoal on white paper, the other with white chalk
and charcoal on black paper. They could root around
and add "scrap" supplies, too, like chalk pastel. Our
room is teensy and classes are full (24 kids) so many
ended up working with their papers taped to walls.
The room was pretty filthy for the duration, but the
kids really liked working with charcoal. We talked a
lot about addressing the background, too; when it was
ok to be empty, how to create one when needed...

Hope this is helpful!

:D Wendy
